Submarius vs Surfline.
Surfline owns surf. The cam network across hundreds of breaks is a genuine moat — if you want to eyeball your home wave before driving over, Surfline is unmatched. Submarius doesn't have cams and isn't trying to. We cover the same ocean that surfers share with spearfishers, divers, anglers, and boaters — from one app, with a water-clarity forecast Surfline doesn't offer and safety features that are permanently free.

Who should use Surfline?
If your primary use case is surfing and your home break has a Surfline cam, there is no substitute. Eyeballing live video of the sandbar or point before you drive over is a different product than reading a forecast — and the cam network has 20+ years of accumulated spot data, forecaster writeups, and community memory behind it. That's a moat.
Surfline is also the right tool if you want human forecasters interpreting the raw models. Their team writes regional outlooks and surf-specific commentary that algorithmic forecasts alone can't replicate.
Who should use Submarius?
Submarius is the better fit if:
- You do more than surf. Spearfishing, diving, fishing, boating — one app, same ocean. Activity modes reweight which signals matter.
- You want a water-clarity forecast. Surfline doesn't have one; most ocean apps don't. Ours combines NOAA CoastWatch Kd490 satellite data, river-plume detection, and community reports.
- You care about safety features being free. Shark alerts, SOS, buddy GPS are permanently unpaywalled with Submarius.
- You prefer a one-time purchase. Our $149 lifetime tier is capped at the first 1,000 founders — a real alternative to recurring subscriptions.
- You want a usable free tier. Submarius free includes full current conditions and a 2-day forecast, not a limited check quota.
The philosophical difference.
Surfline is a surf-first product, built around human forecasters and a cam infrastructure. Submarius is an ocean-intelligence product that treats surfing as one of eight activities sharing the same ocean. Both legitimate approaches; different answers to "what's this app optimizing for?"
If Surfline works for you and the annual price is fine, it's a mature product you can trust. If you're shopping for something that covers more than just surf — or if you're tired of subscription pricing and want a one-time alternative — we're built for that.
Can you use both?
Many surfers who also dive, spear, or fish already do — the apps don't overlap much in practice. Use Surfline for the cam check and human spot report; use Submarius when the question is a go/no-go verdict across multiple activities, or when you want water-clarity or bite-score data.
